GREENVILLE - A Greenville woman pleaded guilty Friday afternoon in a case involving the death of her baby.
Lauren K. Jones, 28, entered a guilty plea to one count of Endangering Children, a felony of the third degree, in the Darke County Common Pleas Court. The state dismissed an indicted count of Involuntary Manslaughter, a felony of the first degree, in exchange for her change of plea and testimony against her co-defendant, and the father of the child in the case.
Jones and 29-year-old Scott A. Webber, the parents of the 16-month-old female baby, allegedly gave the child the over-the-counter sleep-aid ZzzQuil in February 2013. An investigation led to charges being filed against the couple after the baby died as a result of poor sleeping environment and the drug in her system, according to Darke County Prosecuting Attorney Kelly Ormsby.
Jones is currently being held on a $75,000 bond in the Darke County Criminal Justice Center awaiting sentencing on April 4 at 3 p.m. Webber is scheduled for a jury trial starting March 18 in the Darke County Common Pleas Court.
Jones is represented by Miami County defense attorney Jack Hemm. She faces a maximum of 36 months and a $10,000 fine in the case.
