It was a banner year for Eaton’s girls basketball team.
The Lady Eagles won 20 games for the second straight year, winning their first-ever league championship in the process. In addition, Eaton reached the sectional championship game for a second consecutive season as well, finishing the season with a 20-5 record.
This year’s All-County team reflects those very accomplishments. A total of seven players from Eaton earned either first or second team honors.
Autumn Whirley and Michelle McKinney bring different aspects to the team, but they have one thing in common — they made the Eagles go.
The duo were named The Register-Herald’s co-players of the year. They are joined on the first team by teammates Danielle Karns and Liz Tolliver, Kate Deaton of National Trail and Adrianna Moore of Preble Shawnee.
Whirley, a 5 foot, 6 inch junior guard, is more off an offensive threat, while McKinney, a 5-6 senior, is a lockdown defender who got the assignment of guarding the other teams best player.
Whirley topped the 1,000 point plateau in only her junior season. She finished the year averaging 13.3 points per game, 3.1 assists a contest and 3.3 rebounds a game.
McKinney’s numbers don’t stand out, but her defensive pressure in not allowing opponents to run their offense was a key to Eaton’s success. She averaged nearly 3 steals per game.
Karns, a 6-2 junior, scored 10.2 points per game, grabbed 5.6 rebounds a contest and averaged 2 blocked shots.
Tolliver, a 5-9 junior, averaged 8.2 points per game and 5.8 rebounds.
Deaton, a 6-1 senior who is headed to Ohio State on a track scholarship, averaged a double-double, scoring 11.3 points a game and grabbing 10.4 rebounds.
Moore, a 5-8 junior, was one of go-to players for the Arrows. She tallied 17.7 points and 11 rebounds per game. In addition, she collected four steals and dished out 3.4 assists per game.
The second team consists of three players from Eaton, and one each from National Trail, Preble Shawnee and Tri-County North.
For Eaton, making second team are senior Kasey Titkemeyer, senior Katie Yoder and junior Libby Springmier. Joining them are Miranda Mize of National Trail, Maddie Woodard of Preble Shawnee and Jackie Marshall of Tri-County North.
Eaton honorable mention are Julia Titus of Eaton, Andrea Hunt and Payton Laird of National Trail, Samantha Began and Elise Walker of Preble Shawnee and Haily Keener of Twin Valley South.
