SOUTHERN PREBLE COUNTY — Opening Day: The Preble Shawnee Wee Arrows, cheerleaders and S.A.Y. Soccer will have opening day today Saturday, Aug. 12, with a parade starting at 10 a.m. Come out and support our youth.

Birthday’s: Josh Malone. Daryl Hollenbaugh, former Gratis Fire Chief, celebrated his 80th birthday Thursday surrounded by family and close friends.

Fun Day: The Camden Somers Fire Association will hold its Sunday Fun Day Back to School Bash this Sunday, Aug. 13, at 1 p.m. Franklin Wrestling Entertainment will have their show at 2 p.m., sponsored by Camden Crossing BP. There will be bounce houses, hot dogs, snow cones and more.

Food Bank: The Gratis Food Bank located at the First Southern Baptist Church in Camden and is available for assistance for anyone in the Gratis area.You may call 937-452-7291

Calling all teachers: Jesse’s Diner in West Elkton would like to honor all teachers in the Preble Shawnee district by offering them 15 percent off their meal when they present their badge.

Grant awarded: Chief Gary Taylor of the Camden-Somers Fire Department announced his department will receive a $286,000 FEMA. grant for a new tanker. Taylor went on to say that they have worked tirelessly to get this grant with a special thanks to Captain Josh Forrer. This truck will serve the area well.

Trivia answers: President William Henry Harrison stayed in Gratis at 100 N. East Street, and Sherwood Anderson was Camden’s famous guest.
