Preble County YMCA to celebrate 15 years

EATON — The YMCA will be hosting a celebration on Thursday, Feb. 15, all day, with special activities.

The YMCA opened Feb. 2, 2003. With this being the 15th year, staff will celebrate Feb. 15.

The Y will be open to the community to come in to take a tour, work out in the fitness center, swim in the pool or try a group exercise class.

The Y will be waiving the joiner’s fee for anyone whot joins on the Feb. 15.

The Y will also be hosting 15 hours of fitness classes all day, every hour on the hour, and and offering discounts and specials; and there will be free door prizes for every 15th member to scan in on the hour, according to YMCA officials.

Preble County YMCA Fun Facts

The YMCA opened in 2003 with 1,600 membership units. In 2018 the facility currently has over 2,000 membership units and serves over 6,600 members with 1,400 seniors through their insurance-based memberships and over 5,200 family members, adults, and youth in Preble County. The Y has enrolled over 2,500 children in aquatic programs and nearly 9,000 children in youth sports programs.

In the past 15 years, the board, community, members and staff of the Preble County YMCA have donated over $900,000 towards the Y’s annual campaign. This money is to support kids and families locally at the Preble County YMCA with memberships, swim lessons, youth sports, LiveStrong at the YMCA, Safety Around Water Week, YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program and more.

The Preble County Youth Foundation owns the facility and partners with the YMCA, Kettering Health Network and Sinclair Community College. The Youth Foundation has expanded the facilities four times since the groundbreaking in 2002. In 2009, the Y expanded with a 5,734 sq. ft. addition with the expansion in the fitness center, new nursery, office and community spaces.

Past Executive Directors include Josh Sullenberger, Ben Davis and Josh Haynes. Past Program Directors include Gayle Horton, Abby Helsinger, Anna Fomin, Phil Elliott, Alan Milkis, and Greg Waxler.

Current Preble County YMCA staff includes Executive Director Paul Schreiber; Senior Membership Director Becky Morin, Health and Wellness Director Heather Macy; Aquatic Director Ashleigh Buffenbarger; Maintenance Director Leo Rousseau; Sports Director Wes Smith; Office Manager Dayna Augspurger and School Age Child Care Coordinator Cathy Bulach.
