Election sees many races, issues

Eddie Mowen

In an off-year election, just over 50 percent of Preble County's registered voters turned out to make their voices heard.

Voters decided various measures on the Tuesday, Nov. 3, ballot, which included issues for several local school districts.

"In an off-year election, that is pretty good," Preble County Board of Elections Deputy Director Terri Hans said.

Among the school issues was a proposed bond issue and tax levy for the Eaton Community School District, for the purpose of paying the local share for a school construction project, under the state of Ohio Classroom Facilities Assistance Program, which voters rejected by 90 votes. The bond issue amounted to $6,850,000 to be repaid over 28 years at rate of 1.4 mills; and the tax levy, .50 mill for 23 years for the cost of maintaining classroom facilities included in the project.

Eaton Superintendent Brad Neavin was not available for comment at press time.

National Trail Local School District saw its issue on the ballot - a renewal of a .75 percent income tax, for current expenses - pass by 93 votes.

And, Twin Valley Community Locals Schools proposed bond issue and tax levy - 1.6 mill repayment of $2,936,146 for the bond issue and 0.5 mill for maintenance of classroom facilities constructed, failed for a third time, by just 40 votes.

Other issues voters faced ranged from three state issues and tax levy renewals for the Preble County Health District and the Preble County Mental Health and Recovery Board, to a new tax levy to fund police protection for Lakengren.

Voters also chose their favorite candidates in races for village councils, township boards of trustees and school boards. Results will be certified on Nov. 17, according to Hans. Hans said there were just a little more than a 170 provisional ballots county-wide which needed to be checked.
