Warm and Fuzzys
By Penny Hungling, West Alex, Ohio
What triggers warm and fuzzy feelings?Warm and fuzzy feelings What is warm and fuzzy besides a fleece blanket on a chilly winters day. Warm and fuzzies are the sentimental journeys we travel, usually from memories triggered by the senses, more often a smell, a sound, or sight. Usually warm and fuzzys are from a good memory of the past, or a good feeling you get like from helping someone, or even seeing a long project finished. Warm and fuzzys are the awakening of the senses. Picture this; your sitting in your favorite chair with your favorite hobby (reading a book, quilting, or hugging your child),a fire flickering in the fireplace, your favorite aroma filling the room, maybe a gentle melody is playing on the stereo, while outside it is an overcast day with cold temperatures and everything is quiet and good. In a future time you see the fire flickering like it was that day, or you hear the song that was playing, or you smell the aroma and your mind travels back to that day of comfort. Go ahead, allow your mind to sit there a while and re-enjoy it again. Notice how the tenseness melts away and you even breathe deeper and I think I see a smile crawling across your face. This is why we buy music that makes us fuzzy, candles that smell good, to help us remember. Warm and fuzzys can be something that does not change it’s value, remains the same throughout the years; faithful, dependable. We need things we can rely on in our lives, because most things around us are in a constant change. I get warm and fuzzy when I hear the program Sunday Morning. To me, it’s something I can count on being the same good news program. And though the commentators and articles change, the music, sun in the background and idea stays the same. The evening news is another trigger, again the fact that they are there trying to make sure we are informed, the music and the announcer of the main speaker. Seeing certain people can trigger warm and fuzzys also, like my dad’s best friend, though my dad is dead, he reminds me of a time when we all got together. Warm cinnamon bread or rolls, straight out of the oven trigger warm and fuzzys. Old songs from my parents time and my younger years, smells of hay being harvested, even the smell of a pole cat (skunk). Warm and fuzzys are good things that we need to help us get through the bad times. They make our emotions surface and re-awaken relaxing feelings, and this benefits our bodies because unlike stress, relaxing calms the nerves, settles the stomach, helps us to become less tense, anxious or rigid. Believe it or not, relaxing is a recreational activity and a good one and in the stressful environments we create, much needed. So, take a minute or two and think of your own warm and fuzzy, now when your stressed out or just need to relax, recall your warm and fuzzy point.
