LEWISBURG — A 29-year-old Preble County man was found dead in his Sonora Road home on Tuesday, Dec. 27.

His death, according to Sheriff Mike Simpson, has been ruled a homicide, and investigators are seeking any information anyone may have regarding the death.

In a release on Wednesday, Dec. 28, Simpson said at 5:47 p.m. on Tuesday, the Preble County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call from 3994 Sonora Road.

“The caller reported that he had returned home and found his son deceased in the residence,” Simpson said.

PCSO deputies responded and found the victim, Jonathan Schaaf, unresponsive.

According to Simpson, investigators secured a search warrant for the property and spent several hours Tuesday night processing the scene.

“Deputies remained at the property through the night and investigators returned this morning to complete the scene investigation,” Simpson said Wednesday.

Schaaf, a resident at the Sonora Road address, was removed to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy was performed Wednesday, according to Simpson.

The coroner ruled Schaaf’s death a homicide.

Preble County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation Crime Scene Units both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Simpson.

Anyone who may have information regarding this case should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 937-456-6262, or leave a message on the crime tip line at 937-683-8047.

At press time Thursday, the case remained under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Preble County Coroner’s Office.

This was Preble County’s first homicide of the year.
