EATON —At press time, the Preble County Sheriff’s Office and the Preble County Coroner’s Office were investigating the death of an inmate at the Preble County Jail.

According to Sheriff Mike Simpson, on Saturday, July 15, at 10:28 p.m., “arrestee Jack Eaton, 53, arrived at the jail after being arrested by the Eaton Police Division.”

Eaton was committed to the jail on charges including drug possession (heroin), a fifth-degree felony; possession of drug abuse instruments and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to Simpson, following normal procedures, Eaton was booked into the jail and placed in his cell at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Routine jail checks were conducted by staff throughout the night. Staff found no unusual circumstances during those checks, Simpson said in a press release.

During breakfast serving on Sunday morning, at approximately 5:24 a.m., Eaton was found to be unresponsive on his bunk by corrections staff, according to Simpson.

Eaton Fire & EMS was immediately contacted and responded to the jail.

Eaton was pronounced dead. He was removed to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, where an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Monday, July 17.

The investigation will continue by the Detective Section of the Sheriff’s Office, according to Simpson.
