PS BOE discusses purchasing policy

CAMDEN — Under Preble Shawnee Local Schools’ current policy, all purchases over $5,000 have three quotes associated with them, however, during a PS Board of Education meeting held Thursday, Aug. 10, the board was presented with several items for approval which only had two quotes.

The board was prompted to approve purchases over $15,000 during the meeting, but under the category there were several items which only had two quotes. Per school guidelines, purchases over $5,000 must have three quotes. Superintendent Matt Bishop took responsibility for the mistake and said he already had a conversation with the supervisors. According to Bishop, from now on all purchases over $5,000 will have three quotes.

Bishop also shared, regarding test scores, Preble Shawnee did not score well in comparison to the rest of the county.

“I don’t want to get caught up completely on where we’re at in regards to the other schools,” he said. “As long as we know where we’re at and what we have to do. I feel good about the things that we have in place. It will work itself out. We will hopefully see our rank slowly move forward.”

Board Vice-President Gary Rader was appointed delegate for the Ohio School Boards Association conference, with Jeff Wood serving as his alternate, although both will attend the conference.

During old business, board member Charlie Biggs said, “I don’t know if its old business or not, but last meeting the West Elkton teachers told us how computers don’t work over there. Did we address that any?”

Bishop noted, the district had purchased “WiFi technology” to improve those areas of concern.

Wood questioned, “Is there an inherent issue at West Elkton or is what they have just not good?”

“From what the staff says, there are issues. I don’t know if it has to do with the specific location of the school. We should be able to put enough WiFi hot-spot areas in to work,” Bishop answered.

Bishop also estimated football field speakers would be completed by Sept. 1.

In other business:

•The board will be advertising to receive bids for the purchase of one school bus.

•The board approved a psychology services contract with Butler County Educational Service Center.

•The board accepted the retirement/resignation of Michael Taulbee, effective Aug. 1.

The next Preble Shawnee Local School District Board of Education meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. in the PS Board of Education office located at 124 Bloomfield Street in Camden.
