Oxford to hold free concerts through September

OXFORD — The City of Oxford has extended its Concert Series through the month of September. The idea actually came about when Miami University asked Enjoy Oxford, formerly known as the Visitor’s Bureau, what it would take to extend the series — in a bid for growing Town and Gown relations.

Executive Director of Enjoy Oxford Jessica Greene agreed with the only stipulation being the University’s support.

Normally the Thursday night concerts would have ended with the community picnic at the end of August, but this year that is not the case. The town held their picnic, but the concerts will continue.

Greene said the idea to extend the concerts was all due to Miami University.

“It really was them contacting us — again for Town and Gown to engage the students with the residents in a natural way — so they said, ‘What would it take?’” she explained. “I told them ‘their help’ and they agreed. We have four more concerts this year made possible by Miami University.”

For the Summer Concert Series it is a long process to choose which bands perform — the committee begins accepting applications in December. The decision regarding what bands would perform in September was left to Miami University.

“It did take about two months to pick out all the bands. That’s what was going on before I announced the new series. They have a great selection planned out,” Greene said. “I’m working with the student groups to promote the concerts. They will be passing out posters and helping me do Instagram ads, things like that.

“Thank you to everybody who makes these concerts possible. We’ve had a lot of support and a lot of volunteers, it is a truly strong community event.”

The September Concert Series kicked off on Thursday, Sept. 7, with Premium Blend with DJ BeatBanguz.

Upcoming concerts includes:

•Inspirational and Gospel music by Little Marlana on Sept. 28.

Concerts are held on Thursdays from 7:30-10 p.m. in Oxford’s Uptown Parks.
