EATON —Effective pond management involves managing fish populations, aquatic plant levels, and oxygen levels, among other factors. To help with part of this management, the Preble Soil and Water Conservation District is accepting orders now through Friday, Sept. 25 for the annual fish sale. Fingerling-sized Largemouth Bass, Redear Shellcracker, Black Crappie, Channel Catfish, Bluegill, Hybrid Bluegill, and Yellow Perch may be purchased for pond stocking. Black Fathead Minnows and White Amur will also be offered for sale.

The fish pick up date will be Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Preble SWCD back parking lot, 1651 North Barron Street, Eaton. A postcard reminder will be sent prior to the pick-up date.

White Amur, also known as Grass Carp, are used primarily to control submerged vegetation problems. Grass Carp grow and survive well if the plant species present are those they will readily eat. It is generally recommended that 15-20 per acre be stocked if the pond has a severe (greater than 60 percent coverage) vegetation problem, 8-12 per acre if there is 40-60 percent vegetation coverage, and 4-6 per acre if coverage is 20-40 percent. In ponds with little vegetation, it is recommended not to stock grass carp as a lack of food results in their poor survival. As learned at the annual Pond Clinic, it is advisable to measure the size of one’s pond instead of estimating. Knowing the area of the pond determines the number of fish suitable to the environment. Too many fish per area of water can overcrowd a pond.

When stocking a pond remember the number and type of fish stocked will affect success. The key is to maintain the proper balance of species.
