PC crash under investigation

LANIER TOWNSHIP — The Dayton Highway Patrol Post investigated a serious crash with injuries which occurred on Jan. 1, at 6:38 p.m on U.S. 35 in Lanier Township, Preble County.

Preliminary investigation determined an eastbound Chrysler Town & County, driven by Michael R. Rike, 65, was struck head-on by a westbound Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Bryan C. Spivey, 56.

Both vehicles as a result of the collision traveled off the south side of the roadway, according to troopers.

The Chrysler Town & County came to rest in a ditch after striking a traffic sign. The Chevrolet Silverado came to rest against a utility pole and struck a Vectren natural gas line.

After the primary collision, an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Ella M. Williams, 71, struck debris in the roadway from the primary collision.

Rike was transported by Care Flight to Miami Valley Hospital for serious injury. Spivey was transported by EMS to Miami Valley Hospital for serious injury, according to reports.

The active gas line was sealed by a Vectren crew and no residential evacuations were warranted, OSP reported.

Assisting agencies included the Preble County Sheriff’s Office, West Alexandria Fire Department, City of Eaton Fire Department and Vectren Gas.

The crash remained under investigation at press time.
