TVS may receive new roof next year

WEST ALEXANDRIA — Twin Valley South School may see a new roof installed next year if the school district gets the green light on a loan borrowed against anticipated tax revenue.

At the monthly school board meeting on May 23, the school board discussed the potential for the project, and possible others, in partnership with the Ohio School Facilities Commission.

There is potential to borrow up to 50 percent of expected funds, and potential for matching funds from OSFC, which would result in about $2.5 million. This would allow for full roof replacement, along with several other major updates. Roof replacement could begin as early as the end of the 2016-17 school year. However, there are no immediate concerns as to the roof’s safety or condition; an OSFC evaluation last year stated that replacement anywhere within 2-5 years is reasonable.

The school’s chiller is in more immediate need of replacement, and the board weighed options to be decided at a later date. The board can decide to repair the existing chiller at a cost of $233,221, extending its life by 10 years, at which time a full replacement would be required, or purchase and install a new chiller at a cost of $398,846. While full replacement costs more up front, the updated technology and efficiency would mean far greater savings over time that would recoup the cost. A new chiller would also carry a longer lifespan than the current one.
