A Matter of Balance: fall prevention program

EATON — Every year, one in three Americans aged 65-plus falls. Every 29 minutes, an older adult dies following a fall. Falls are the leading cause of injury death for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through evidence-based interventions, practical lifestyle adjustments, and community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.

If you have an aging parent, grandparent, or neighbor in your life, helping them reduce their risk of falling is a great way to help them stay healthy and independent as long as possible. The Preble County Council on Aging offers “A Matter of Balance” classes.

A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based program, specifically designed to reduce the fear of falling, stop the falling cycle, and increase activity levels among older adults (physical inactivity is cited as a significant risk for falls and fall-related injuries in older adults). Participants learn to set realistic goals in increased activity, and change their environments to reduce fall risk factors. They learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance. The class is recommended for both men and women.

The classes are held two hours a day, one day a week for eight weeks. Classes are held on Tuesdays, beginning Aug. 21 and ending on Oct. 9 running from 10 a.m.-noon Pre-registration preferred, and registration ends Aug. 28. Call the Senior Center at 937-456-4947 for more information, and to register.
