Kids Fishing Derby

When you live at a lake, what is the most of the most significant past times? Fishing, of course. Dads and Moms fish during the bass tournaments, and grandpas and grandmas, too. Recently the Marine Lakes Management held a crappie tournament. So, now it’s time for the kids to have their turn.

At Hammer Lake, on Saturday, June 20, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Lakengren children ages 12 and under may register at the small shelter house near the lake, starting at 8:45. How many fish do you suppose they could catch? In the past, the number ran into the thirties and forties. Of course, they aren’t determined by size.

Kids should bring a fishing pole, a bucket and some bait. Trophies and prizes awarded at the end of the derby.

OLCA Spring Meeting

The 2015 Spring Ohio Lake Communities Association (OLCA) Meeting was held at Choctaw Lake near London, Ohio. The LPOA was represented by Kevin Thorpe and Paul Ellison.

Legal and water quality issues, the impact of how fair housing laws affect lake associations, management/board responsibilities. Sunshine Laws, and a dredging roundtable were covered in great detail. Ideas and problem-sharing are always an eye opening experience.

Appreciation to Thorpe and Ellison for attending and bringing this important information back to the Lakengren Board of Trustees.

Bicycling Summit

Recently, Heidi Bortel, a Lakengren resident, attended the Miami Valley Cycling Summit held at the Fort Piqua Plaza. Bortel, along with hundreds of like-minded bicycling enthusiasts around the country, discovered many community benefits that cycling cultivates.

Bortel is the newly-appointed Chair of Preble Trails, and others on the committee are: Mike Sanders, Co-Chair/City; Dan Schmidt, Co-Chair/County; Anna Fomin, Treasurer; Holly Steele, Secretary; Karla McMahan, Community Liaison; Erin Abney, Marketing & Design Specialist, and Cathy Maynard, Activities.

A mission statement has been approved for this new group, which became a partner with the Preble County Youth Foundation. Expect soon to readily recognize: Building pathways to safely connect people and communities. Their first handout will be displayed at the upcoming Buckeye Bridge Ride on June 27.

Corn Hole Tournament

Dave Cortner, President of the Christmas Lights Committee, wants to share some info about the parking lot version of soft horseshoes. Yep, he means Corn Hole Tournament is on your horizon. Cortner states it’s not too early to start forming your team and practice, practice, practice.

The CLC shares, you take a hefty little bean bag (actually it’s called a corn bag since it is filled with squirrel food, not beans), toss it at a rectangular plywood board about 30 feet away, and hope to either stick it somewhere on the platform or sink it through the single hole cut into the surface. It’s safe for everyone, and the whole family can play.

The date is Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Lakengren Marina, so you have plenty of time to select your team. Registration from 11 to 12 and the tournament begins at Noon, with double elimination. There is a $20 entry fee per team. A pancake and sausage breakfast precedes the tourney (more details on that later), plus there will be food and beverages available during the afternoon games.

For their fundraiser, a kayak and paddle will be raffled off on that date. Club members can sell you a raffle ticket right now, but to register for the event call Cortner at 937-336-2292 or Rick McMahan at 513-532-3008.

Reminders

Residents, you still have time to register for the golf cart poker run (adults only) on June 13 and the free swimming lessons at the Lakengren pool on June 15-19. Pick up an application for the swimming lessons at the LPOA office or the guard house by Friday, June 12.
