VERSAILLES - An industrial accident claimed the life of a worker at Codino’s Limited Inc. on Tuesday afternoon.

The call for help went out to local emergency services (EMS) that a worker was caught in an extruder and that it was a possible death. An extruder is a piece of equipment used in food processing that has an auger that conveys material through high pressure to cut.

Glenn Brown, general manager of the facility released the following statement a couple of hours after the accident,” There was a workplace fatality at Codino’s Limited in Versailles, Ohio. The accident is currently under investigation. We are not releasing any names until the family has been notified.”

The facility in Versailles is one of two properties owned by Codino’s, a pasta manufacturer of products like stuffed rigatoni, stuffed ziti, lasagna sandwiches and lasagna rollettes.

According to their website, Codino’s has been family owned and operated for over 50 years.

Darke County Coroner Dr. Tim Kathman said investigators with the coroner’s office put on Tyvk suits, used as a barrier for processing the scene. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) was also called to the scene.

“Right now we’re in recovery,” Kathman said. He nor Versailles Police Chief Mark Humphries do not ever recall such an accident in Darke County.

After the initial arrival of EMS and the coroner’s office staff, more EMS vehicles arrived on the scene. Chief Medical Investigator for Darke County’s Coroner’s Officer, Joe Van Vickle, said additional vehicles are there for establishing a rehab crew.
