Eaton’s varsity wrestlers continued competing well in dual meets by beating Greenville 72-6 and Talawanda 52-15 last week. The Eagles are now 11-1 in dual meets this year.
In addition, Eaton traveled to Alliance for the Top Gun Invitational over the weekend, where they had two wrestlers reach the second day of competition
“Every year when we get the opportunity to wrestle at Alliance our guys gain valuable experience,” Eaton coach Mark Silvers said. “They get to wrestle some of the top teams in Ohio and several out-of-state schools. They use this experience to grow and apply what they’ve learned in our upcoming matches.”
Branson Bennett finished his tournament by going 3-2. He opened with a loss, then advanced by pinning his next three opponents.
“Branson really rose to the occasion and is starting to come into his own,” Silvers said.
At 160 pounds, Aldin Leaker finished 4th with a record of 4-2.
Leaker was unseeded and opened the tournament with a pin. He then won back-to-back matches by desicion to reach the quarterfinal, where he upset the #4 seed.
In the semis, Leaker suffered loss to the #1 seed Tony Dailey of Massillon Perry, who is also nationally ranked.
“Any time we have an athlete place at Top gun, they are track to having a great season. Now we build off of the experience we gained and apply it in the coming weeks,” Silvers said.
Winning by pins against Greenville were Bennett, Austin Bleil, Leaker, Levi Gilbert, Shane Helsinger, and Matt Todd. Winning by decision were Brandon Weaver and Drew Moore. Collecting forfeits were Coleman Foster, Noah Herzog, Mac Altom, Logan Islamovsky and Shane Hammock.
