Preble Shawnee senior Josh Willoughby placed 10th in the high jump at the state track and field meet with a jump of 6-04 at Jesse Owen Memorial Stadium, Saturday, June 7.
Preble Shawnee track and field coach Stephanie Hurley said she thinks Willoughby did good at the meet.
“He did well, he cleared 6-04 which is what hes been doing lately,” Hurley said. “He hasn’t cleared above that since the first or second week of the season, so he did well today.”
This was Willoughby’s first time at the state meet. During his sophomore and junior years, he made it to the regional meet.
“He really works hard on his jumping and he’s been working on that from basketball season on,” Hurley said. “He’s been really dedicated, really serious. He wanted to be here at the state meet, so I think he reached that goal.”
Hurley said she knows Willoughby was disappointed he didn’t make it to the podium, but said she thinks he will look back on his senior season with pride.
“To make it to state is one thing that I think he’ll look back and be proud of,” Hurley said. “I think he had a great senior year. He didn’t lose until he made it to regionals, so that was great. Last week he placed second and this week 10th, but there’s some big jumpers here, so I think he did well for the year.”
