LEWISBURG — Tri-County North has a new golf coach and he is ready to begin building a successful brand of golf for the Panthers.
First year coach Matt Powell has inherited a team whose two best golfers were lost to graduation a season ago, but a team who is chock-full of sophomores and potential.
The Panthers will start three of these sophomores — Zach Tincher, Bret Booso, and Bailey Lairson. Senior Luke Thies will also be a starter for Tri-County North this season.
Booso and Tincher are the only two players returning who have varsity experience and both have a chance at being awarded first or second team in the conference, says Powell.
“I’d like to finish somewhere around .500 in the division realistically,” said Powell. “I’m just looking forward to getting to know the kids and seeing them improve and develop as players and individuals.”
Sophomore Brandon Parsons and freshmen Dillon McCullough round out the remaining roster of the Panther’s varsity squad this season.
As Powell looks at his youthful roster, he can’t help but think at the potential down the road for his team.
“I’m looking forward to competing for league titles down the road. These kids are so young but I think next year and the year after, we have a shot at winning the league,” said Powell.
“I want the kids to enjoy themselves and develop as student athletes as well.”
The Panthers kicked off the golf season with the Cross County Conference Preview match at Stillwater Valley on Friday, Aug. 8. They also competed in the County Meet, hosted by Eaton on Monday.
On Wednesday, the Panthers will travel to Dixie for a match. League play will begin on Monday, Aug. 18 when Tri-County North host conference foe Mississinawa Valley. League play continues on Tuesday, Aug. 19 when they also host Franklin. The Panthers will then travel to Bethel on Thursday, Aug. 21.
