OHIO — Tinting your car windows could cost you hundreds of dollars. Many people tint their car windows to create a custom look, increase privacy, reduce heat in your car, block harmful UV rays and even to keep the window from shattering. You may want this job to be handled by professionals. Your Better Business Bureau offers tips for finding a trustworthy one.

Over the last year, your BBB recorded more than 64,000 inquiries about auto window tinting businesses in North America. Locally, almost 500 inquiries were filed with your BBB about this industry.

When looking for a reputable auto window tinting company, your BBB suggests you:

• Get references. Check with family and friends. If they’re happy with who they use, most likely you’ll be too.

• Research the window tinting company. Consider its reputation and years of service.

• Ask to see samples of the companies’ work.

• Don’t necessarily settle for the lowest price.

• Inquire about the types of window film they offer. Reputable tint shops carry complete lines of window film from one or multiple window film manufacturers. They may carry dyed, hybrid and metallic in a variety of colors and darkness.

• Make sure employees, facility and surroundings are clean. You wouldn’t want to bring your car to a dirty and unkept facility.

• Be sure tint shop doesn’t do work outside. It’s critical to remove all dust and dirt from the windows before applying the window tint.

• Determine if the window tinting company has proper licensing and insurance.

• Ask if the window tinting company participates in professional trade associations like the International Window Film Association. A company belonging to such an organization shows commitment to professionalism.

• Get all details, including price, services, guarantees and warranties in writing. Make sure you understand everything before signing. Remember, the warranty on the car tint varies depending on the window film you choose. Consider installing only window film backed with a lifetime warranty for materials and labor. Confirm the warranty covers problems like fading.

Remember, to check your state’s window tint laws. An illegal tint can nullify any manufacturer’s warranty.
