Abner, Laird lead Blazers to win

UNION CITY — Behind career-high performances from Savanna Abner and Makena Laird, National Trail’s girls’ basketball team evened its record in the Cross County Conference.

Abner, a sophomore, and Laird, a freshman, each scored 17 points to lead the Lady Blazers to a 52-45 win at Mississinawa Valley on Thursday, Jan. 5.

The Blazers held the lead at each quarter break, 15-10, 29-20 and 40-31.

With the win, Trail improves to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCC.

JaLynn Byrd and Evan Byrd each added six points, while Davlyn Werner had four, and Kelsey Patrum chipped in two.

“The girls played well and maintained their high energy level for all four quarters and responded well to every challenge tonight,” Trail coach Troy Ferguson said.

The team was schedueld to return to action Tuesday, Jan. 10, at home against Cambridge City Lincoln (Ind.). The Blazers are also scheduled to host Newton on Thursday, Jan. 12.
