Preble Shawnee’s boys’ basketball team closing in on SWBL title

MIDDLETOWN — For Preble Shawnee’s boys’ basketball team, the scenario was simple — win its final two league games and earn at least a share of a league championship — lose one and its title hopes are most likely over.

One of those two games, though, was a road game at Middletown Madison, where the Mohawks are usually hard to beat.

The Arrows got all they could handle Friday, Feb. 10, as the hosts hung around for a better part of three-plus quarters before Shawnee senior Kevin Ketring gave his team some breathing room en route to a 42-33 win for Shawnee.

That victory sets up the season finale on Friday, Feb. 17, where the Arrows will host Milton-Union with a chance to clinch the title on its home court.

Preble Shawnee and Carlisle are both 10-1 in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Buckeye Division. The teams split their two contests with each winning on the others home floor.

Against Madison, though, it looked as if Shawnee was going to make quick work of the Mohawks, racing out to a 10-2 lead. But Madison fought back to make it 13-11 after one and trailed the Arrows just 21-18 at the half. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied 29-all.

With the game tied at 31-31, Ketring, who also had nine rebounds and handed out two assists, knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to give his team a 37-31 lead with just over three minutes left in the game.

The Arrows never looked back.

Joey Bates added 11 point and nine boards for the Arrows, while Levi Lewis chipped in with six points, two rebounds and a pair of assists.

On Saturday, Shawnee, now 14-6 overall, used a strong fourth quarter to pull away from host Arcanum fora 63-48 win.

Ketring capped a solid weekend with 21 points and six rebounds. Andrew Monnin added 11 points and four rebounds. Bates contributed seven points and five rebounds and Tyler Worley tossed in seven points and handed out four assists.

In addition to hosting Milton on Friday, the Arrows were scheduled to play at Bellbrook on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
