Lewisburg VC discusses dog park, K-9 unit

LEWISBURG — Lewisburg village council met in regular session on Thursday, Sept. 3, and discussed implementing a dog park, as well as purchasing a K-9 unit for the police department.

Mars Pet Care does a project each year with their Mars volunteer program. The purpose of these projects is to improve the community and they have chosen to donate a dog park to the village.

The company will provide all the labor and supplies, at no cost to the village, as they install fencing and signage along the south side of the park.

City Manager Jeff Sewert said he checked into liability issues with the park and the village is covered and has no risk.

Council approved the project and it will become the first dog park in Preble County.

Mars will begin installation this year as phase one of an ongoing project, adding amenities, such as benches, in the coming years.

Police Chief Rick McGee also gave the council information on the purchase of a k-9 unit. Initial cost is estimated to be around $15,000 – which includes the purchase of a dog and training, the labor of the dog’s caregiver, food and vet costs.

No decision was made at the meeting.

In other business, the Tour de Donut from Arcanum will be riding through Lewisburg on Saturday, Sept. 12. Riders are estimated to be in the village between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The park will be the first donut stop on the tour and it is in the plans that a man – who isn’t a rider in the tour – will attempt to break a world record by eating 60 donuts in five minutes.

Council also agreed to allow the spray park to remain open until the weather cools down.
