Eaton, NT cross country teams win titles

PREBLE COUNTY — Eaton and National Trail’s boys’ cross county teams claimed their respective league championships last weekend.

Eaton, with 67 points, won the Southwestern Buckeye League Southwestern Division title, hosted by Middletown Madison, at Sebald Park, while the Blazers took home the Cross County Conference’s top award at Bethel.

Both meets were held Saturday, Oct. 14.

The Eagles were led by Tanner Titkemeyer, who placed sixth overall, in 16, minutes 33 seconds. Alex McCarty was seventh in 16:34 and Cole Bulach was eighth in 16:35. Steven Cottle (17:10) was 21st, while Alex Newport was 25th in 17:25, Jack Bortel was 30th in 17:33 and Todd Coates was 36th in 17:40 to round out the top seven.

For Trail, the Blazers edged Miami East 80-83 for the title.

The Blazers were led by Travis Hunt, who placed sixth overall in 17:22.7. Cameron Harrison was 13th in 17:55. Ian Miller was 15th in 18:00.03, while Adam Eyler (18:16) was 21st, Josh Bishop (18:24.78) was 25th, Caleb VanWinkle (18:28.4) was 27th and Nicolas Wellman (20:47.2) was 69th round out the top seven.

Eaton’s girls placed fourth with 109 points and Preble Shawnee was 10th with 292 in the SWBL.

For Eaton’s girls, Katie Bassler (19:45) was seventh overall to lead the Eagles. Destiny Brubaker (20:36) was 14th and Claire Meyer (20:47) was 15th.

Rounding out the top seven for Eaton was Brooke Caplinger (21:56) in 39th place, Briana Baker (22:07) in 40th, Sasha Taxter (22:12), 42nd, and Arica Hamilton (22:50) 53rd.

For Preble Shawnee, Caiden Duskey (22:50) was 54th, Alivia Reek (24:04) was 71st, Debbie Tombragel (24:49) was 86th, Brooke Dalton (29:00) was 128th and Regina Blair (29:18) was 129th.

In the CCC, Trail’s girls placed four runners in the top 12 and finished second with 46 points. Covington won the meet with 38 points.

Molly Skinner led the Blazers with a seventh place finish in 20:37.6. She was followed by Lauren Sargeant, who was eighth in 20:40.0, Halle Osborn (11th/21:01.3), Evan Byrd (12th/21:08.1), Jenna Garden (32nd/23:48.4), JaLynn Byrd (35th/24:15.1) and Lauren Murphy (44th/25:15.4).

Tri-County North finished eighth with 193 points. The Panthers were led by Lauren Koenig, who placed 42nd in 25:12.7. Taylor Cooper was 43rd in 25:12.7, while Addie Singleton was 50th in 26:01. Rounding out the top seven was Abigail Smeltzer (56th/27:09.5), Julia Myers (61st/28:24.8), Hailey Brumley (66th/31:13.9) and Caitlyn McCullough (68th/31:33.5.)

Twin Valley South, which does not field an entire team, was led by Zoe Utsinger, who placed third overall in 19:50.6. Maddyn McQueen was 65th in 28:51.0 and Maggie Johnson was 70th in 32:24.8.

For Twin Valley South’s boys, which placed sixth as a team with 143 points, were led by Kyle Saul’s fifth place finish in 17:16.2 and Brandan Wright was eighth in 17:34.9. Tyler Wright was 20thi n 18:15.9. Chris Keener was 34th with a time of 18:46.2. Justus Craft was 93rd in 22:35.4 and Curtis Hittle was 96th in 22:51.2.

Tri-County North was 12th with 290 points. North was led by Brandon Smeltzer, who was 29th with a time of 18:30.4. Ian Alexander was 52nd in 19:58.5. Gregory Ras finished 74th in 21:17.1. Curtis Grubb was 81st in 21:43.4. Patrick Timmons placed 91st in 22:28.9 and Dakota Timmons was 103rd in 23:42.3.

The district tournament will be held at Cedarville University on Saturday, Oct. 21. The Division III girls race, which features National Trail, Preble Shawnee, Tri-County North and Twin Valley South will begin at 10 a.m. The D-III boys races is scheduled to begin at 10:45 a.m. and features National Trail, Tri-County North and Twin Valley South.

The D-II girls race, which features Eaton, is scheduled to begin 11:30 a.m. The boys D-II race with Eaton and Preble Shawnee, will begin at 12:15 p.m.
