PREBLE COUNTY — Preble Shawnee and Tri-County North’s girls soccer teams wrapped up successful seasons with trips to their respective Division III sectional finals last week.
Preble Shawnee, the No. 4 seed in the Dayton Division III sectional, lost a 1-0 decision to No. 7 Springfield Catholic Central, on Monday, Oct. 23, at Monroe in a steady rain.
The Arrows (12-5-1) and Irish were tied until the final minute. SCC scored the lone goal of the match with 59 seconds left in regulation to end the Arrows three-game winning streak and season.
Shawnee couldn’t take advantage of having the wind at their back during the first half.
“I thought the second half we played well. We got a couple good looks and just didn’t put the ball in the net,” Shawnee coach Jeff Stiver said. “In a game like this it comes down to somebody making a play, somebody not making a play and that girl just put one in from 40-yards out with the wind. It’s tough to lose a game, especially that way. The kids played hard.”
Shawnee, which was seeking its second straight sectional championship, opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Dayton Christian on Oct. 19.
Tri-County North, who won the Cross County Conference for the first time in program history this season, fell to state-ranked and No. 2 seed West Liberty-Salem, 5-0, at Bellbrook, on Monday, Oct. 23.
North (14-2), the No. 9 seed, entered the contest on a 11-match winning streak, including a 3-0 win over Miami East in the second round of the tournament.
