EATON — The Eaton tennis squad continues to roll, winning three out of four matches over the past week and improving its record to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Southwestern Division.
The Eagles only have one match left and will finish the season with a winning record for the first time in over a decade.
They opened up their week against Centerville on Monday, Sept. 14, losing 1-4 before rattling off wins against Milton-Union (4-1), Lehman Catholic (5-0) and Northridge (4-1).
Senior and number one singles player Tess Flynn had the lone victory over Centerville, winning in two sets (6-2, 6-4).
The squad heated up once again though, dominating their next three match-ups.
Milton-Union was their first victim on Tuesday, Sept. 15 for the Eagles senior night match.
Flynn won in two sets once again (6-3, 6-3) while Maria Kern and both doubles squads also only needed two sets.
Kern, playing number three singles, won fairly easily, handling her opponent 6-2 and 6-1.
Number one doubles team Kyra Houle and Honoka Sato also cruised to a win (6-2, 6-3) while number two doubles team Barbara Ann Grant and Mariah Brewer logged another victory (6-3, 6-1).
Next on the docket was a road trip to Lehman Catholic on Wednesday, Sept. 16 where, between the five varsity teams, the Eagles only dropped 14 total games, and all five only needing two sets to get the win.
Flynn had the toughest match of the night, fighting back and forth with her opponent before putting her away 6-4 and 6-1 in straight sets.
Number two singles player Rebecca Wolf wasted no time, blowing past her competitor 6-1 and 6-1 while Kern cruised to 6-1 and 6-0 set wins.
Houle and Sato won all six games of their first set before putting their doubles opponents away with a 6-4 win. Grant and Brewer also dominated, winning 6-0 and 6-2.
Closing out the week, Eaton took on Northridge at home on Thursday, Sept. 17, winning 4-1.
Wolf earned a 6-0 set win before battling to a 7-5 win in the second set. Kern did not lose a game in her match though, winning both sets 6-0.
Houle and Sato didn’t lose a game either in their victory while Grand and Brewer only dropped one game, winning their match 6-1 and 6-0.
“If they can play to their potential, good things will happen,” said head coach John Hitchcock.
The Eagles only have one game left in the regular season, traveling to Edgewood on Monday, Sept. 28.
But first, they will play in the SWBL tournament – where they are in third place behind Bellbrook and Oakwood. The tournament will be held on Thursday, Sept. 24 at Thomas Cloud Park in Huber Heights starting at 9 a.m.
