Arrows drop first SWBL contest

CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee’s girls’ basketball team had a chance to move into sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Buckeye League’s Buckeye Division when it faced off with unbeaten Waynesville last week.

The Arrows, however, couldn’t maintain an early lead as the host Spartans rallied for a 46-41 win on Thursday, Dec. 14.

Shawnee, which led 13-8 after the first quarter, shot just 35 percent from the field for the game.

Waynesville outscored the Arrows 16-8 in the second quarter and 13-10 in the third to take a 37-31 heading into the fourth quarter.

Junior Jenna Lovely led the Arrows with 14 points, four rebound and three steals.

Senior Malorie Plaugher had seven point and nine rebounds. Junior Brenna Woodard added seven points and four rebounds and junior Nicole Sims chipped in seven points.

Shawnee started the week with a 44-41 win at Arcanum on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Lovely led the Arrows with 14 points, including going 8-for-10 from the foul line. She also added four rebounds.

Plaugher tossed in 11 points and had 11 rebounds. Woodard scored nine and Shelbie Brown chipped in five points.

The Arrows led 15-13 after the first quarter and 21-18 at half. They extended the lead to 37-24 by the end of the third quarter.

Shawnee closed out its three-game road trip with a 55-27 win over Northridge on Saturday.

The Arrows placed three players in double figures led by Lovely, who scored 13 point and had five rebounds and four steals.

Sims tallied 10 points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals. Brown scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Woodard had nine points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Shawnee (7-2, 5-1 SWBL) is scheduled to host Eaton (3-5) Thursday, Dec. 21.
