UNION CITY – Twin Valley South remained perfect in the Cross County Conference, spoiling Mississinawa Valley’s homecoming as the Panthers shutout the Blackhawks 33-0 on Friday, Oct. 2. It was South’s third shutout on the season.

“It was a rainy windy night and we started off slow. They are an improved Mississinawa team. The new coaches are doing a great job of getting the kids to play hard and buy in,” said TVS head coach Tyler Cates. “Defensively, we played great like we have most of the season. They moved the ball a few times, but our kids buckled down and held them out.”

The Panthers also had a huge effort from senior wideout J.J. Utz, who scored 21 of South’s points in the win.

“Offensively we ran the ball well and actually threw the ball well considering the conditions,” said TVS head coach Tyler Cates. “We had a few costly penalties on offense that we need to clean up, but overall great effort and another win. I’m proud of our kids.”

Mississinawa Valley threatened early when their opening drive into the red zone before South picked off the Blackhawks, ending the threat.

South first got on the scoreboard when Jacob Bassler found Mike Meyers over the middle before the receiver weaved his way to a 20-yard score with 5:13 remaining in the first. Utz added the extra point and the Panthers led 7-0 just like that.

The Panthers stalled on their next drive but were finally able to strike again after a 30-yard pass and catch from Bassler to Utz on a third and long set up a four yard score by Utz with just over three minutes remaining in the half.

A Blackhawks fumble on their next drive allowed South to capitalize once more before the half, when Bassler found Utz on a five-yard slant pass with 26 seconds left.

They added two more touchdowns in the third quarter with a 28-yard touchdown reception from Utz and a four yard run from Bassler, capping the night at 33-0.

Utz finished the night with over 100 yards rushing and just under 100 yards receiving. Official stats were not made available by press time.

South improved to 5-1 (4-0 CCC) on the year and will host Bethel on Friday, Oct. 9.
