Blazers out last Coldwater, 17-16; fall to Newton

NEW PARIS — After opening the season with two straight wins, National Trail’s varsity softball team split a pair of games last week. The Lady Blazers are now 3-1 on the season.

National Trail picked up its third victory with a 17-16 win over Coldwater on Friday, April 7. The Lady Blazers came back from an early 2-0 deficit with an eight run third inning. However, Coldwater scored 14 runs in their final three at-bats, leaving NT down two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

A three-run inning in their final at-bat gave National Trail the one-run win.

The Lady Blazers offense was led by Bobbi Grimes with two hits including a triple and a double. Savanna Abner went 2-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI’s.

NT’s Davlyn Werner pitched five innings before being relieved by Molly Skinner for the last two innings. Skinner picked up the win.

National Trail lost its first game of the season, and only Cross County Conference matchup, against Newton on Thursday. Newton turned a close game into a 9-4 win with seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Abner went 2-for-4 with a double and Ariel Lee went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Kayleigh Minner had an RBI single and Makena Laird came up with a big hit in the 5th inning to drive in two runs. Skinner pitched 5 1/3 strong innings for the Lady Blazers.

National Trail was scheduled to play at Centerville High School on Monday, April 9. They were set to return home on Tuesday against Tri-Village and will visit Ansonia on Thursday. They finish the week at home versus Bethel on Friday.
