North softball ends season with loss in district semifinal

GREENVILLE — Tri-County North’s softball team had its season come to end with an 8-2 loss to Bradford in the Division IV district semifinal on Tuesday, May 15.

North, which beat the Railroaders 2-0 earlier in the season, fell behind early and never got its bats going.

The Panthers (19-4) had not reached the district semifinal — what used to be considered the sectional final — since 2015.

North struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Bradford, which scored twice in the first and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Railroaders extended their lead with four runs in the fourth.

In the first inning, Bradford scored its runs on a double after a lead off single and walk put runners on first and second.

In the third, a lead off double was followed by sacrifice bunt for Bradford. The damage was done a batter later with a two-run homer to make it 4-0.

North scored its only runs in the bottom of the third. Lexi Delong walked, Sidney Jackson followed with a double and Tyler Green reached on bunt single. After a strike out, Riley Cruse singled to score Delong and Jackson to cut the deficit to 4-2.

In the fourth, North allowed Bradford to score four times after two were out.

Pitcher Cruse took the loss for the Panthers. She tossed 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out three.

North managed just six hits.

Green was 2-for-3. Jackson, Cruse, Kaitlin Heindl and Delong each had one hit.
