North improves to 9-7 with pair of wins

LEWISBURG — Tri-County North’s softball team improved to 9-7 overall and 7-5 in the Cross County Conference with a pair of wins last week.

North began the week with a 6-4 win over visiting Covington on Tuesday, April 23. On Thursday, the Panthers suffered a 3-2 loss at Miami East, before closing out the week with a 5-2 win at National Trail.

Against Covington, North used a three-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead, then broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Kenzie Lykins.

In the fourth, Lexi DeLong and Annie Ferguson each drove in runs for the Panthers.

Riley Cruse recorded the win for North. She surrendered four runs on six hits over seven innings, striking out eight.

DeLong homered in the second inning to tie game.

Emily Norris led North with a pair of hits.

Both teams were strong in the pitcher’s circle on Thursday, but Miami East was just a little bit stronger at the plate in a victory over the Panthers.

North got things moving in the second inning when Jaelyn Hawkins singled to score a run.

North took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on single from Jackson.

East, though, scored three times in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out triple to take a 3-2 lead.

Jackson was in the circle for North. She gave up three runs on four hits over six innings, striking out ten.

Jackson, Hawkins, Riley Cruse, and Avery Shank each had one hit to lead the Panthers.

On Friday, North knocked National Trail out of title contention.

The Panthers scored four times in the third inning to take control of the contest.

After Trail cut the lead in half with a two-run sixth, North added a single run in the top of the seventh for the final margin.

Taylor Green went 2-for-3. Cruse was 2-for-4. DeLong added a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Cruse was credited with the victory. She lasted seven innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one.

North finished with nine hits in the game.

North is scheduled to begin sectional tournament play on Thursday, May 9. The will host either Catholic Central or Dayton Christian at 5 p.m. There is an admission fee for all tournament games.
