EATON —Eaton’s softball team is off to hot start after one week.

The Eagles have won three of four, including two in a row.

The latest victory was a slugfest.

Pitchers had a tough day during the game between Eaton and Coldwater, as the two teams put up 27 runs combined in a 17-10 the Eaton win.

The teams combined for 24 hits, including seven extra-base hits.

Ten runs in the first three innings helped the Eaton take control.

An RBI single by Madison Couch, an RBI triple by Becca Mowen, and a two-run home run by Jayna Lee in the first inning and an RBI single by Meghan Puckett and an RBI single by Lee during the second inning helped the Eagles put some runs on the board early.

Lee racked up three RBI on two hits.

Puckett recorded the win for Eaton despite allowing eight runs over 4 1/3 innings on a cold, blistery day. She struck out six, walked none and surrendered nine hits.

Annika Gels came on in relief of Pucket and recorded the final eight outs.

Eaton’s offense handled Coldwater pitching as seven hitters combined for 13 hits, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Five runs in the top of the third helped Coldwater close its deficit to 6-5.

Eaton brought home a run in the fourth inning, and matched that run total in the sixth. In the fourth, the Eagles scored on a walk by Couch, bringing home Gracie Miller.

After pushing across three runs in the top of the fifth, Coldwater faced just a 11-8 deficit.

It didn’t take long for the Eagles to answer as they scored five runs of their own in the fifth on a two-run single by Logan Unger, two wild pitches and an RBI double by Puckett.

Couch 3-for-4, while Puckett was 3-for-5 with a pair doubles and 4 RBI. Lee 2-for-4 with her second home run of the season and three RBI. Gels had a solid showing going 4-for-5 with a pair of RBI..

“I was extremely pleased with our teams effort yesterday despite the wind and cold we showed we could play with some adversity. As we approach league play we have to continue to out hit teams because like we have said all year our offense will keep us in games,” Eaton coach Maggie Neanen said. “Our defense will have to keep playing well and limit errors. We are very proud of our pitchers for limiting the number of free bases they give. Going into league play we need to continuing giving effort and playing hard.”

Eaton topped Dixie 8-5 on Wednesday.

The Eagles opened the season by splitting a double-header with Ansonia on Saturday, March 26. Eaton took game one 9-4, but dropped the second, 5-3.

In game one, Emily Dungan was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Lee was 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.

In the second game, Mowen was 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Couch added a pair of hits.

“Overall I was pleased with Saturday as a whole, of course no coach is ever happy to lose but we did a lot of things well in the game two loss to Ansonia. Game one it was great to see our younger kids step up and the home run hit by senior Jayna Lee really sealed the deal,” Neanen said. “I was proud of the four freshman who started both games because it’s not easy being freshman starters and they handled it well and I am very excited for the rest of the season.

“Like I said in our preview, our offense is going to keep us in games, which it did on Saturday, but our defense needs to tighten up just a bit and our pitchers need to limit the ‘free bases.’”

Eaton was scheduled to visit Bellbrook on Monday, April 4, in the SWBL opener for both teams. Eaton is scheduled to visit Lemon-Monroe on Wednesday, before hosting the Hornets on Friday. The Eagles will close out the week with a double-header at Chaminade Julienne.
