Eagles open SWBL play with win

BELLBROOK —It took Eaton’s softball team a few innings to get going offensively, but once it did the Eagles never looked back.

Eaton racked up 21 hits as it opened Southwestern Buckeye League play with a 12-1 win over host Bellbrook on Monday, April 4.

After allowing an unearned run in the bottom of the second, Eaton, winners of three straight, scored multiple runs in each of the next four innings.

Eaton (4-1, 1-0 SWBL Southwestern) scored four in the third inning, then added three more in the fourth, two in the fifth and closed out the game with three in the sixth.

Senior pitcher Meghan Puckett allowed just three hits and struck out 10 Bellbrook batters en route to collecting the win. She also helped herself with the bat. She went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Freshman Becca Mowen added two hits and collected two RBI, while senior Jayna Lee added three hits. Freshman Annika Gels added three hits including a double.

“I am extremely pleased with how we came out in our first league game,” Eaton coach Maggie Neanen said. “As a team we had 21 hits in 35 at bats, I couldn’t be happier with our offense right now. Our pitchers are throwing well and really limiting the free bases. We just need to keep working hard, continue giving great effort and staying focused.”

The Eagles had two league games against defending SWBL champ Monroe canceled last week due to rain as well as a double-header against Chaminade Julienne.

Eaton was scheduled to visit Oakwood on Monday, April 11, but the game was postponed due to rain. The Eagles were scheduled to host Franklin on Tuesday, Oakwood on Wednesday, Bellbrook on Thursday and Brookville on Friday. They will close at the week on Saturday by traveling to St. Henry for a double-header.
