Weather forces cancellations

PREBLE COUNTY — Mother Nature got the best of area sporting events last week, forcing athletic directors to cancel multiple events.

Most games scheduled for last Monday and Tuesday were played as scheduled.

But from Wednesday through Saturday, baseball and softball fields, along with tennis courts and tracks, remained empty, forcing teams inside for practices.

The cancellation of so many games is leaving athletic directors looking to rearrange the remainder of the spring schedules.

Rescheduling league games becomes the top priority, even if it means canceling non-league contests to get league games made up.

If there is a bright spot, the spring season was only in its second week and most schedules had open dates built in to accommodate early season cancellations.

Events canceled for Wednesday, April 6, included Eaton’s baseball and softball at Monroe, Preble Shawnee tennis against Talawanda.

On Thursday, Eaton baseball at Waynesville was postponed, as was Tri-County North’s baseball and softball at Valley View.

On Friday afternoon, showers and sleet forced the postponement of Eaton’s baseball and softball games against Monroe; Tri-County North baseball and softball at Dayton Christian; Twin Valley South’s baseball and softball at Waynesville and Preble Shawee softball against Bethel.

Most games for Saturday were called off on Friday. The county saw up to a couple inches of snow. Events postponed included National Trail baseball at Middletown Madison; Eaton softball at Chaminade Julienne; Tri-County North softball at Troy Christian, Preble Shawnee baseball at Seven Hills and Eaton baseball against Tippecanoe.

Not all game had been rescheduled at press time.
