Errors prove costly for Trail

ARCANUM — National Trail’s softball team had a chance to keep Arcanum from clinching a share of the Cross County Conference title on Tuesday, May 3, but four errors proved to be costly for the Blazers.

Arcanum wasted little time in taking at least a share of the Cross County Conference championship by scoring four runs in the first inning to pave its way to an 8-2 victory over National Trail.

The Lady Trojans sent all nine batters to the plate in the first, and the key hit was delivered by Cassidy Clark, whose two-run double put Arcanum ahead, 4-0.

The Lady Trojans again went to work in the fourth frame. The first five hitters reached base via a walk or hit and the top four scored. Kaitlyn Zell scored two runners with a single to center, and Elle Siculan delivered a two-out RBI single to bring the Arcanum margin to 8-0.

While the offense was putting up runs, the pitching of Abbie Bruns was neutralizing the Lady Blazer bats. Bruns allowed only four hits through the first five innings and was backed by outstanding defensive play.

Payten Laird started the game on the mound for Trail and allowed five hits and walked six.

According to Trail coach Krista Alldred, Kayleigh Minner had a great day in left field with five put outs with two being diving catches.

Offensively, the Blazers had eight hits but couldn’t string them together. Savannah Abner led the team with two doubles. Alexus Acton and Minner each drove in a run with singles. Kylee Aldridge, Aleah Hunt, Bobbi Grimes, and Kerestin Nugent all added base hits.

Trail scored a run in the sixth and seventh.

Trail was scheduled to play Tri-Village on Wednesday and host Bradford on Thursday. They are to close out the regular season with a trip to Valley View on Saturday for a doubleheader.
