Preble Shawnee holds annual girls basketball camp

CAMDEN — The Preble Shawnee girls basketball program held its annual camp from June 20-24.

First-year basketball coach Kevin Shafer offered this camp for girls in grades 5-8 under short notice, as he was recently hired in at head coach despite being soccer coach for a number of years for the Arrows.

“I got the word out late in the school year, so I was behind in trying to bring in as much as I wanted,” said coach Shafer. “So I was able to get hold of some veteran coaches and we were able to bring in about 20 (players) which is a little over what what I expected.”

The four-day camp focuses on fundamentals such as passing, dribbling, and defense. The camp staff has incorporated numerous challenges for the campers in order to earn points so that at the end of camp, the kids can receive prizes.

“I haven’t run a camp in 12 years, but my assistant and high school helpers tell me the kids are really having fun and are looking for advice from my help — everything is going well,” Shafer said during camp.
