Newport earns scholar athlete award

EATON — Andy Newport, a 2015 graduate from Eaton High School, was recognized as one of 41 Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Southwest District Scholar Athletes at a ceremony held at the Dayton Marriott hotel on Tuesday, June 23.

Newport earned eight varsity letters competing in both cross country and track & field during his career as an Eagle. In cross country, he earned first team All-District and All-League and second team All-Regional during his senior season. He also took second place in the All-County cross country meet and was a four time All-County recipient.

The standout runner has committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Ohio Wesleyan University, where he plans on running both cross country and track while double majoring in biochemistry and psychology. Newport also plans on attending medical school to become a psychiatrist.

The Southwest District Athletic Board was established in 1993 and for 22 has annually presented some of the Southwest District’s top scholar athletes with monetary awards and recognition through the scholarship program.

Recipients were honored with one of the following: An Ohio High School Athletic Association Scholarship, a Southwest District Honorary or Memorial Scholarship or Southwest District Scholar Athlete Scholarship.
