Eaton, PS tennis teams fall in sectionals

CENTERVILLE — The Eaton and Preble Shawnee girls tennis teams competed in the sectional tournament on Oct. 5-6, only to have all members of both teams defeated from advancing further in post-season play.

For Eaton, sophomore Quinlyn Sittloh went up against Danielle Spanbauer of Carroll, losing 6-2, 7-6 (3) in the first round. Senior Allison Cave was able to beat Chloe Davenport of Dixie in the rat-tails brackets, 6-0, 6-0. But she was shut out by No. 4 seed Brianna Douglas 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.

Junior Madison McKinley played a very tough match against Christina Intili of Oakwood, but ended up losing 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The No.1 doubles team of Addie Bell and Samantha Gramaglia earned a first round bye, only to lose 6-1, 6-0, to the top-seed team of Alexis Robinson and Olivia Boch of Chaminade Julienne.

Katelyn Niehaus and Victoria Studebaker did advance farther in the tournament, beating Ellie Adkins and Molly Nixon of Greenville, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. In the second round they edged past Allie Allen and Brittany Motes of Dixie, 6-0, 6-3. But in the quarterfinals, their run came to an end, as they lost to the second-seed Olivia Schragerand Eleanor Lui of Miami Valley, 6-0,6-0.

The Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows fared little better in the event. No. 1 singles Ashlyn Hubbard advanced farthest for her team, winning 6-1, 6-2 in the rat-tail bracket, and next defeated Samantha Ferguson of Carlisle, 6-2, 6-4. In the second round, she made short work of Roop Dab of Miami Valley, 6-0, 6-0, but was dropped by Douglas of CJ, 6-4, 6-2 in the quaterfinals.

Jane Feck was eliminated in the rat-tails brackets, losing to Olivia Hoff, 6-0, 6-1. Kirsten Boon, likewise never made it out of the rat-tails brackets, losing to Porscha Fleming of Valley View, 6-2, 6-3.

In doubles competition, Sidney Quillen and Lauren Smith breezed past Taylor Gwin and Natalie Anna Parry of Waynesville 6-1, 6-0. They then lost to Sidney Purks and Jenna Geisenfeld of Oakwood, 6-1, 6-4.

Finally, Allison Zornes and Alivia Reek teamed up to defeat Isabel Sherk and Marie Rank of Oakwood, 6-4, 6-0 in the first round. But their hopes were dashed in the next round by Rachel Hawley and Mary Stier of Alter in a battle which ended, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

With the losses, the tennis season is now over for both teams.
