Arrows complete XC season

CEDARVILLE — Making its return this season after not having a program for more than a decade, Preble Shawnee’s cross country team participated in the Division III district tournament held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Cedarville University.

“Today, I thought the team did very well,” said Arrow coach Gary Koogle. “Some of the kids broke their personal records despite the wind. Nobody likes to run in the cold but they toughed it out today.”

Koogle saw continued improvement this season, despite hardships.

“Overall, we improved almost every single week and I just can’t be more proud of the kids, regardless of the injuries and low numbers,” he said.

For the boys, freshman Rylan Roberts was the first Arrow runner to cross the finish line (121st, 19:58.) Fellow freshman Carter Roell was the next teammate to finish, placing 165th in 21:19. Sophomores Robert Burs (200th, 24:52) and Jon Hicks (202nd, 25:19) and freshman Dylan Childers (206th, 26:40) rounded out the rest of the boys’ team.

Only two girls participated in the event, due to injuries: freshman Stephanie Howard (121st, 25:29) and sophomore Alivia Reek (147th, 27:36).

The coach is looking forward to next season.

“This is the first time we had a team in about 15 years. I am hoping to have the team back next year and hope they enjoyed this enough to come back,” Koogle added. “There was a late start for us, as we didn’t get started until August when we were not sure if we were going to have a season or not.”
