EATON — A Miami University student involved in a rollover crash in 5700 block of U.S. 127 on Wednesday, Aug. 23, was arrested on charges stemming from the discovery of raw marijuana and hashish in the vehicle he was driving.

According to Sheriff Mike Simpson at approximately 5:10 a.m. last Wednesday, deputies responded to a non-injury crash on U.S. 127, south of Eaton. One vehicle had left the roadway and rolled over.

Upon the first deputy’s arrival, Simpson reported, the driver of the vehicle was observed exiting a nearby cornfield. The driver indicated to deputies he was a student at Miami University and had fallen asleep while driving to Oxford.

The investigation into the crash led to the discovery of several bags containing glass jars, which contained a suspected drug compound, as well as eight Xanax pills, in the cornfield, Simpson said.

The driver, Paul A. McCabe, 20 of Bethesda, Maryland, was arrested.

McCabe admitted to deputies the goes to Michigan to get “medical pot” and drives it back, Simpson said in a press release.

During the course of the crash investigation and routine inventory of the vehicle, which was being towed, deputies located two large duffle bags in the trunk of the car, containing 12 vacuum-sealed plastic bags with suspected marijuana.

The evidence in the case was transported to the Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab in Dayton, where it was determined the the raw marijuana weighed more than 14 pounds, according to Simpson.

The additional evidence in this case was processed and analyzed by the crime lab, Simpson noted.

Deputies housed McCabe in the Preble County Jail and formal charges were signed in Eaton Municipal Court, charging McCabe with possession of marijuana, a third-degree felony; possession of drugs, a first-degree misdemeanor and possession of hashish, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. Deputies also seized $952 in cash from McCabe.

Deputies estimated the street value of the raw marijuana to be approximately $30,000.
