PS tennis 5-0 in SWBL

CAMDEN — Preble Shawnee continued a strong start to the 2015 tennis season when they defeated Waynesville on Tuesday, Sept 1, and Northridge on Thursday, Sept 3.

The Arrows swept all five matches against Waynesville to bounce back after falling 1- 4 to local powerhouse Miami Valley, who is ranked second in the area by coaches.

On Tuesday, Brooklyn Hubbard defeated Megan Eckley of Waynesville 6-1, 6-3 in first singles. In second singles Ashlyn Hubbard defeated Haley Richards 6-2, 6-1 and in third singles Sidney Quillen defeated Carly Connor 6-1, 6-0.

The doubles team of Allison Zornes and Alivia Reek won 6-2, 6-0 over Kaity Kelly and Roslyn Papetti.

Head coach Dave Hubbard was happy with his team’s ability to bounce back from their first loss of the season the night before.

“Our girls did a great job bouncing back from our first loss last night. To pick up another league shut out was a big deal for us right now,” he said.

The team completed another SWBL sweep on Thursday, Sept 3, by defeating Northridge 5-0.

B. Hubbard won 6-3, 6-3, A. Hubbard won 6-2, 6-2, Quillen won 6-0, 6-0. In Doubles Allison Zornes and Alivia Reek won 6-0, 6-0 and Delany Bennet and Lauren Smith won 6-0, 6-1.

Coach Hubbard said every point is important as the team aims for an SWBL crown at the end of the season.

“We put together some very solid tennis all the way through the lineup tonight,” he said. “Our girls understand the importance of these league points and have been doing a great job picking them up.”

B. Hubbard was the lone Arrow to pick up a win against Miami Valley, defeating Sarah Hinshaw 6-0, 6-4.

“We just ran into a very tough, well-coached team tonight,” Hubbard said after the match. “Miami Valley is strong from top to bottom. Brooklyn played one of the best matches of her career to beat another one of the area’s top players.”

Preble Shawnee is now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the SWBL Buckeye Division.
