Cold Shelter volunteers honored

EATON — The HIT Foundation hosted an appreciation dinner at Eaton First Church of the Nazarene on April 25, in honor of the volunteers and donors who made the Preble County Cold Shelter a success this past winter season.

Some 33 local individuals seeking shelter from the cold were provided with warmth, safety and food over 47 nights when temperatures or wind chills dropped below freezing.

Cold Shelter is a community initiative organized by the HIT Foundation and hosted by the Nazarene Church, offering homeless individuals and families shelter and a warm meal. Overnight supervision is provided by volunteers and the meals are prepared by local churches and community groups. Most supplies are donated.

Twenty-nine volunteers, 15 churches and 14 donors were vital to the success of the Cold Shelter.

HIT Foundation Board President Mary Bullen, welcomed the honorees and the evening began with a modest dinner, similar to what Cold Shelter guests would eat. A recognition program and video presentation followed dinner, and the HIT Foundation was assisted throughout the evening by three former Cold Shelter guests who are now working and stably housed and wishing to give back to their community.

A candlelit moment of silence to recognize those struggling with homelessness ended the evening.
