Murphy, Hubbard advance to district

PREBLE COUNTY — Eaton’s Sophia Murphy and Preble Shawnee’s Ashlyn Hubbard advanced to district tennis tournament after placing in the top four of their respective sectionals last week.

Murphy, a freshman, placed second at the Division II sectional at Troy, while Hubbard took third at the Dayton Division II sectional at Centerville.

The No. 1 seed, Murphy opened postseason play with a bye. She won her second round match 6-1, 6-0 over A. Dunn (Urbana). In the round of 16, Murphy defeated M. Brunner (Lehman Catholic) 6-3, 6-0. In her quarterfinal match, Murphy cruised past B. Wilson (Springfield Northwestern) 6-0, 6-0, to secure a spot in the district.

In the semifinals, Murphy beat Dakota Schroeder, of Tippecanoe, 6-2, 6-3, to reach the sectional final.

In the final, Murphy lost a hard fought, three-set match to fellow freshman Amelia Zweizig, of Tippecanoe, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Hubbard, the No. 2 seed, reached the semifinals before losing.

In the first round, Hubbard defeated Emily Milligan (Carlisle) 6-0, 6-0. In round two, she beat Molly Nixon (Greeneview) 6-0, 6-0. Both of those matches were held on Thursday.

On Friday, Hubbard won here semifinal match over Morgan Summons (CJ) 6-2, 6-3. She closed out sectional play on Saturday.

She fell in the semifinals to No. 3 seed Natalie Connely (Oakwood) 6-3, 6-0, before topping Lanie Sorg (CJ) 6-3, 7-5.

Eaton’s Tess Murphy reached the round of 16, while Quinlyn Sitloh won her first match to finish in the top 32.

Eaton’s doubles team of Katelyn Niehaus and Brianna Ward lost in the second round and the team of Madison McKinley and Addie Bell dropped their first-round match.

Preble Shawnee’s Alivia Reek won her first match before falling in the round of 32 and Michelle Bulach lost her first round match.

Both of the Shawnee’s doubles teams were a match short of advancing to the district.

Lauren Smith and Jane Feck reached the quarterfinal before losing to the No. 1 seed and Zoey Collins and Shay Neal reached the round of eight before losing to the No. 3 seed.

The sectional main draw was held Thursday and Friday due to being moved indoors on Thursday and not being completed on time. Semifinals and finals were held on Saturday.

The district tournament will be played Thursday, Oct. 12 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
