Aaron Hendrich

NDIANAPOLIS — Winners of the 2017 National Agricultural Proficiency Awards were announced on Friday, Oct. 27, during the sixth general session at the 90th National FFA Convention & Expo. Awards were given in 47 categories. Aaron Hendrich of Eaton was awarded the award for Agricultural Mechanics Repair and Maintenance — Entrepreneurship.

When Hendrich, of the Eaton-MVCTC FFA Chapter, was seven years old, his parents gave him an old push mower that did not run. After disassembling it, he made some repairs, put it back together and it ran. His interest in engines continued, and he was eventually selected to represent Ohio in the National 4-H small engine competition, placing second. Hendrich hopes to have a career in small engine maintenance and repair and eventually become a mechanical engineer. He is supported by his parents, Esther and Phillip, and his FFA advisor, Rebecca Holbrook. This award was sponsored by Kubota Tractor Corporation and Mystik Lubricants.

Kaylor Pearson

LA MIRADA, CALIFORNIA — Kaylor Pearson, a freshman at Biola University and resident of New Paris, was among 153 incoming freshmen who received one of the college’s highest scholarships — the President’s Scholarship — for the 2017/2018 academic year.

Freshmen are eligible for the President’s Scholarship — $18,000 per year — if upon entering the university, they meet the requirements of the scholarship. Approximately 17 percent of this year’s incoming class received this award.

Students are considered for this scholarship upon admission to the university based on the combination of their GPA and SAT, both math and English, scores. The average recipient of the President’s scholarship has a GPA of 3.93 and an SAT composite score of 1375. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.2 to continue to receive the scholarship the following year.

Recipients of the Biola President’s Scholarship were honored at a special reception on Oct. 27.
