County wrestlers compete at districts

TROY AND WILMINGTON — Eleven county wrestlers reached the district level but all come up shy of their goal of advancing to state.

Four of the county’s five schools were represented at either the Division II tournament at Wilmington High School or the Division III tournament at Troy’s Hobart Arena on Friday and Saturday, March 4-5.

National Trail senior Caleb Reynolds will be a state alternate at 132 pounds after fighting his way back to a fifth-place finish after losing his first match in the Division III tournament.

Reynolds lost 6-4 in the first round to Jacob Griffith of West Liberty-Salem.

In the consolation bracket, Reynolds won by pin over Braedn Conn of Parkway in 3:26. Reynolds won his next two matches by pin as well, beating Nathan Opichka of Madeira in 4:07 and Riley Holmes of Northridge in 1:50.

Reynolds fell in the consolation semifinal by fall in 1:17 to Trey Allen of Mechanicsburg before pinning Payton Platfoot of Versailles for fifth place.

Reynolds is now 28-5 on the season.

Preble Shawnee freshman Nolan Earles went 2-2 at 120 pounds. Earles opened the district tournament with a pin of Slayde Merriman of West Liberty-Salem in 3:55. In his second match, Earles lost by pin in 2:42 to Gavin Caprella of Lima Central Catholic. Earles then defeated Cade Bergman of Versailles 4-0 in the consolation round, before falling to Czar Dickson of Indian Lake 12-2 to finish his season with a 27-11 record.

Twin Valley South sophomore Brayden Childers went 0-2 to wrap up his season with a 6-13 record.

At 144 pounds, freshman Henry Toschlog of National Trail went 0-2 to end his season with a 12-15 record.

At 157 pounds, Preble Shawnee junior Brayden Doran went 1-2 to end his season with a 33-7 record. Doran won his first match by pin over Gabriel McGill of West Liberty-Salem in 1:29. He lost his quarterfinal match 10-4 to Dickie Engel of Cincinnati Reading, before defaulting in the third round of the consolation.

At 165, Twin Valley South sophomore Braydon Koeller won a pair of matches before bowing out in the third round of the consolation matches. Koeller ends the season 17-10.

After losing in the first round, Koeller defeated Colton Blosser of Dixie, 10-5, and pinned Awesom Mitchell of Triad in 2:59.

At 175, Preble Shawnee sophomore Riley Stevenson went 2-2 to end his season with a 32-12 record. Stevenson opened with an 8-2 win over Zander Davis of Indian Lake. He then lost by pin in the quarterfinal, before winning his first consolation match by pin over Dylan Bowyer of Lincolnview.

Also at 175, National Trail senior Ethan Wilson went 1-2 to end his season and career with a 20-7 record. Wilson won his first match by pin in 4:59 before dropping his next two matches.

In Division II, Eaton had three wrestlers compete at the Wilmington District.

Junior Lucas Abner went 2-2 at 113 pounds to finished in the top eight. Abner won his first match by pin over Brendan Lester of Marengo Highland in 4:35. He then fell 6-0 to Jovanni Greco of Hamilton Ross, before scoring a major decision over Anthony LaVerdiere of Columbus Bexley, 9-1. Abner finished the season with a 25-15 record.

At 165, junior Daniel Caldwell went 1-2 to end the year with a 12-10 record.

At 215, junior Zac Shaffer also went 1-2 to end his season with a 26-11 mark.

The state tournament is scheduled for Friday-Sunday, March 11-13.
