EATON — A Lewisburg woman is facing charges of cruelty to animals following the discovery of a dog abandoned at a local intersection.

According to a press release from Sheriff Mike Simpson, on Dec. 27, 2022, the Preble County Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding a beagle puppy which had been dumped at the intersection of Verona Road and Sonora Road, in a small plastic crate.

Deputies located the crate, sitting on its top, with the dog inside, according to Simpson.

“On this particular day, it was 25 degrees outside. The dog was barely able to move and was taken by deputies for emergency medical treatment at a local veterinarian. The veterinarian determined that the dog was approximately 22-weeks old and was found to be malnourished, very thin, suffered from decreased muscle loss, and was dehydrated,” Simpson said in the press release.

Deputies began an investigation regarding who was responsible for leaving the dog and the investigation led to a search warrant being served and the arrest of Kayla Rae Brown, 26, of Lewisburg. Brown was arrested on Monday, Jan. 30 at her residence.

Brown was charged with the following crimes in Eaton Municipal Court: cruelty to animals, a 5th degree felony; cruelty to animals, a 1st degree misdemeanor; cruelty to animals, a 2nd degree misdemeanor and falsification, a 1st degree misdemeanor.

Brown appeared in Eaton Municipal Court on Tuesday, Jan. 31, and bond was set at $25,085.00 cash. She remained in custody at the Preble County Jail at press time Monday morning, Feb. 6.
