There is nothing foolish about April because it’s time for summer books. There are tons of titles, but we have narrowed it down for you. Here are several of the best summer books for you to read as well as some anticipated books for children and teens.

Alexandra Bracken – The Darkest Legacy: This is the long-awaited new novel in NY Times bestselling Darkest Minds Series and now a major motion picture. It’s about rehabilitation camps that imprisoned seventeen year old Suzume “Zu” Kimura and countless other kids speaking out for all kids who have Psi ability. This book is the first in a series of four and is a narrowing story of resilience, resistance and reckoning that will thrill loyal fans and new readers alike. Romantic Times said, ‘Bracken’s latest is maintaining constant tension and a new twist on dystopia. This is one not to miss.”

Patrick Ness – The Knife of Never Letting Go: This is the first book in the series about Prentisstown that isn’t like other towns. Everyone can hear everyone’s thoughts in an overwhelming, never ending stream of Noise. But in a town where privacy is impossible, there is a secret so awful young Todd must run for his life. The second book is “The Ask and the Answer.” and third is “Monsters of Men.” These series have received great ratings. The Irish Times said, “One of the outstanding literary achievements of the present century.”

Jake Maddox – Backfield Blow and Dance Team Drama: I have always liked the sports novels by Jake Maddox. Here are two written for boys and girls. In “Backfield Blow,” after a player gets a hard hit in football,he has to think about how much he loves the game, calm his jitters and if he can stay safe on the field. Another of Jake’s books is “Dance Team Drama.” After moving a girl she has to get acclimated to a new dance team and they aren’t as friendly as her last team. Will she quit something she loves or will she find a way to work it out? There are all types of sports and scenarios with Jake – power, skills and courage. Open a sports story and prepare to Sweat!

Marcia Schonberg & Illustrated by Bruce Langton – B is for Buckeye: This is for youngest book lovers. You will find fascinating text by Schonberg and stunning illustrations by wildlife artist Langton as they bring Ohio history and information to love this book. This book is perfect for your favorite Buckeye and comes with a ton of Buckeye facts. With color and story you can discover America state-by-state with other books by Sleeping Bear Press. Teacher’s guides are available.

Jane Yolen and Illustrated by Paola Domeniconi – What To Do With A Stick: Jane Yolen had a career that surpasses most other authors’ work. Her final book in a trilogy about ordinary objects with extraordinary uses that focuses on a stick. That’s right, a stick! Before kids played in the house all day their moms sent them outside so she could clean, put up food, do the laundry or just take a break. Kids found bugs, sticks and rocks and these would become things they collected or played all day. As with most things it fulfills its purpose when combined with others that can be made with a stick, a box and a string. Jane is an award-winning author, poet and teacher. This Illustrator, Paolo Domeniconi, lives and works in the small Italian city of Spilamberto.

Reading (and lots of reading) is the only way to keep kids growing as readers and they need lots of good books.
