T’bolts defeat Wildcats at Day Air Ballpark

DAYTON — Wednesday the Northmont and Springfield varsity baseball teams played in the Dragons High School Baseball Showcase presented by Bob Ross Auto Group at Day Air Ballpark.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Northmont responded with three runs in the home half to take a 3-1 advantage.

Jamir Ross drew a leadoff walk and advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch. Nate Teller followed with a single to right field to score Ross. Teller stole second and on a high throw on the steal, he advanced to third.

Jacob Beck drew a base on balls and stole second. Andrew Shingler belted a long drive to right center field for a double to score Teller and Beck to put the Thunderbolts up 3-1.

Northmont tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Nate Schommer drew a leadoff walk. Schommer scored when Ross crushed a long drive to deep centerfield for a triple. Teller scored Ross with a sacrifice fly to left to put the Thunderbolts on top, 5-1.

The Wildcats got three runs in the top of the fourth to make it a 5-4 game, but Northmont scored three in the bottom of the sixth to lead 8-4. Springfield scored two runs in the top of the seventh as the Thunderbolts held on for an 8-6 victory.

Teller earned the victory on the mound. He pitched four innings, scattered three hits, gave up four earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts.

Drew Carver worked two innings in relief, allowed two hits with no runs and two strikeouts. Connor Price pitched one inning and got tagged for three hits, two earned runs with one walk and one strikeout.

With the victory the Thunderbolts improved to 12-8 overall and 5-6 in Greater Western Ohio Conference play. The Wildcats fell to 3-14 and 0-12 in the GWOC.

Ross led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two stolen bases, three runs and one RBI. Shingler went 2-for-4 with a double, one run and two RBIs. A.J. Conti went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base and one RBI. Brady Lupton also went 2-for-4.

Teller helped his own cause by going 1-for-3 with a stolen base, one run and two RBIs. Jacob Beck went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base, scored a run and had one RBI.
