BROOKVILLE — Park board approved the plan for a health and fitness day for area seniors on May 31 from 1-4 p.m. at the Leiber Center in Golden Gate Park.

The event is free and open to everybody.

The request for the event was made by Robin Kent, of Brookhaven Retirement Community, located at 1 Country Lane in Brookville.

Kent, Brookhaven’s business development coordinator, said the event will be held in conjunction with the national Senior Health and Fitness Day slated for May 31.

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is the nation’s largest older adult health and wellness event.

More than 100,000 seniors are expected on May 31 to participate in local health and wellness events at as many as 1,000 locations across the country.

In order to participate, organizations must register with the Mature Market Resource Center, the company that organized the annual event 30 years ago.

Planned activities for the May 31 event in the Leiber Center include:

1:30-2 p.m. – Senior exercise class with Brookhaven’s rehabilitation director

2:30-3 p.m. – senior self defense

3:30-4 p.m. – senior yoga with Velvet Swartzel

There will be door prizes at the event.

Representatives from Eye Docs, located at 430 Arlington Road, Brookville, and Clear Choice Hearing Aid Centers, located at 428 N. Wolf Creek St., Brookville, will be at the event.

Kent said she wants to hold the event because she believes it will be beneficial for the seniors in the community.

“I feel senior health and fitness is very important and I think it would be a fun day to bring to the seniors in the community,” Kent said.

Park board president Adam Blevins favored the event.

“She talked to me about it and I definitely feel it’s a very exciting program,” Blevins said.

“Everybody is tired of talking about Covid. They want to get out and do things and doing something like this seems very exciting to me,” Blevins continued.
