Register soon for story times

EATON — The Eaton Branch of Preble County District Library will soon start fall sessions of the popular story times, with programs available for children as young as six months up to 12 years.

Registration starts Sept. 1. The story times will run from Oct. 7 through Nov. 12.

Story times incorporate speaking, singing, reading, writing, and playing to prepare children for a future of reading, as well as cultivate the communication and social skills necessary for success in school.

Children learn to follow directions, improve motor skills learning to glue and use scissors, and improve concentration as they listen to stories, according to library officials.

Studies have linked early exposure to reading to later success as children progress through school. In recent years, nonprofit organizations like “Read Aloud 15 Minutes” and “Zero to Three” have emerged, stressing the importance of early literacy programs, like the story times at the Eaton Branch Library.

The programs offered are “Mother Goose Lap Time,” which is for children ages six months to three years. The 30 minute program has two sessions: one that meets on Wednesdays and one on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

“Library Mice” is for children ages three to kindergarten, and it’s available Wednesday mornings at 10:30 a.m., Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m., or Thursday afternoons at 4:45 p.m. Each “Library Mice” session is 45 minutes.

For older kids, the Eaton branch will have afterschool crafts. Children from 6-12 years old can stop by after school for the 60-minute craft program.

Eaton Library’s story times fill up quickly, so make sure to register as soon as possible when registration opens on Sept. 1. For additional information, contact Teresa Deaton, Sarah Tozier, or Malynda Davis at the Eaton Library at 937-456-4331.

All story time sessions will be held at the Eaton Library at 301 N. Barron St. As with all library programs, there is no charge for the story times.
